I have been wanting to start blogging for awhile now, but I wasn’t really sure where to begin. I couldn’t think of anything particularly interesting to write about, so I kept putting it off and putting it off. But recently something awesome happened, so now I have a story to share and write about for my very first blog post!
It all started back in August when I decided to enter one of my necklaces in a contest. The contest is called the Art Jewelry Monthly Design Challenge and it is held every month by Art Jewelry Magazine. How it works is that each month a theme is chosen by the previous month’s winner, and then people can enter a piece of their handmade jewelry that fits that theme. The Art Jewelry staff picks a winner out of all the numerous entries and then reveals the name of the winning jewelry artist each month in their newsletter along with a picture of the winning piece.
I have seen these winners each month in the newsletter and thought that I should give it a try and enter a piece myself. But I always seemed to find some excuse…..I don’t have time this month; I don’t have anything that fits the theme; I’ll never win so why bother trying, etc, etc. Until finally, last month in August, I had the perfect piece for the chosen theme. The theme was “Flight” and the piece I entered is one of my favorite pieces to date. It is a large Egyptian-style scarab pendant with movable wings, set with blue and green onyx gemstones. It is suspended from an Egyptian spiral chain that I cut and coiled completely by hand.
Before submitting my entry, I took a look at all the other pieces that had been entered so far that month. There were so many beautiful and artistic pieces that I felt I probably wouldn’t win. I got a little discouraged and started to have second thoughts about entering, so I put it off. In all the years that I’ve been a subscriber to Art Jewelry, I’ve only entered this contest one other time…..and I didn’t win. Finally on the last day of August, and the last day to enter the contest, I thought “what the heck, I don’t have anything to lose, so I might as well give it a try!” So I got my entry ready and clicked the submit button at 11:30pm, with only 30 minutes to spare before the deadline.
The rules said that the winner would be chosen the following day, Sept. 1st, and be notified by email. So the entire next day I was neurotically checking my email like every 10 minutes or something. But alas, the whole day went by with no email from Art Jewelry. I went to bed that night kind of depressed that I didn’t win yet again. And then the whole next day also went by with no email from Art Jewelry. Since I still hadn’t heard from them by that second day of Sept., I was sure that I hadn’t won. So I resigned myself to thinking that my piece just wasn’t good enough. The next morning I got up, still depressed, and sat down at my computer with a cup of coffee. I logged into my email, and to my astonished eyes, there was an email from Art Jewelry and the subject line read “Art Jewelry Design Challenge: Flight – WINNER!”
I was like “What?!!!” and I hurriedly clicked on the email to open it. I had actually won the contest! Wow! I was so excited! The email went on to say that as the winner of the challenge, I get to pick the theme for the month of October, and I get to vote along with the Art Jewelry staff for the October challenge. I will be able to rank all of the October entries in order of my preference to help decide on the winner. My winning necklace is featured in their September newsletter and also on the Art Jewelry website (click here to see it). And they may even include it in print in an upcoming issue of their magazine!
It feels wonderful to have my necklace chosen as the winner. To have that approval and recognition from the staff of Art Jewelry is fantastic! Especially since their magazine is full of beautiful jewelry from very talented and skilled jewelers. I am grateful to be included with such an amazing group of jewelry artists! So I want to give a huge thank you to the staff at Art Jewelry Magazine, and to God and the universe for lining this up in my favor! So don’t listen to that little voice in your head that says you aren’t good enough or talented enough. If there is something you want to do but are hesitating on……believe in yourself and just do it. You might be surprised at the outcome!
